The Pampered Pony Club
Age 8 and up
The Pampered Pony Club is a mentoring program providing a safe space for children to learn all aspects of horsemanship and care. Our method of teaching children inspires empathy, understanding and communication with and for the horse. This enables young people to develop the skills and perspective needed to excel as horse handlers, and eventually as riders, while ensuring high levels of horse welfare.
Children learn to:
Only when children have:
Our “ground up, relationship-based" approach is paramount to our mission of educating children in the craft of horsemanship. All learning starts by developing an intimate bond with a pony and mastering the skills needed to be successful while they are safely on the ground. Then and only then, do children progress to learning how to independently and accurately mount, steer and maneuver a pony with clear communication and light aids.
"Horsemanship is the art of understanding the horse and building a relationship built on mutual respect and trust. Building deep connections in this way allows children to achieve and develop a sense of purpose. Children see they can make profound changes in their own life and their pony's life, leading to a great sense of empowerment." - Lynn Henry, founder of Think Like a Pony.
Our significant investment in the care and handling of our ponies, means that we have incredibly high safety standards. The horses and ponies that come to live at Hoofbeats have been retired from lives of heavy work and show, and have been lovingly rehabilitated in our unique natural environment. Their good health and happiness helps them to become safe, calm and confident companions. Our students play a key role in the ponies’ ongoing care and training. This is inspiring and empowering for young people who see that their input really can make a difference in the lives of the ponies.
To ensure these high standards of education and safety, every child in our program participates in TWO weekly sessions:
A total of 3 hours each week of fun and learning!
We use the fun of navigating obstacle course exercises utilizing the concepts of Horse Agility and Equa-gility (mounted horse agility) as our teaching vehicle:
Hoofbeats provides a fluid and flexible learning environment, with each session having a defined agenda and goal. We partner students with different members of the Hoofbeats herd as they learn the concepts of horse care and safety, while bonding with the horse and building confidence in themselves and their unique gifts. There is a balance between care and safe handling, planned management tasks, and fun ground work and other activities.
Weekly sessions will always build on the previous week’s experience. Students will never be pushed past their level of comfort, but encouraged to safely expand their awareness, and challenged in ways that will build their confidence and understanding of our equine teachers, all while developing the skills they need to be successful with horses on the ground, in the stable and beyond.
When kids follow their own passions....learning happens
"Horse Lover’s Math brings children, horses and math together. Math questions drawn from the real world of horses are not perceived as “math” but as useful information about horses. One is not asked “Why do I have to know this?” If the subject matter is about horses, children want to know." ~ Deborah Stacey, founder of Horse Lovers Math
All of these educational resources support and excel each child’s hands on learning in the Pampered Pony Club. Ultimately, our club seeks to provide a solid foundation on which to build a life full of love for horses and to help children achieve their horse dreams, wherever those dreams may take them.
Horses provide insight into ourselves, and help us to grow
As you can see, The Pampered Pony Club is a unique approach to horsemanship that inspires, educates and empowers children. Our mission is to support young people by offering experiences that facilitate positive youth development as well as helping them to achieve their horsemanship goals. We pledge to provide a safe learning environment so that a young person can thrive physically, mentally and emotionally and work towards a successful relationship with horses.
